Frequently asked questions

Do oil sands projects recycle water?

Yes. AER reports substantial recycling in both mining and in situ operations, but recycling does not mean zero fresh-water use or zero residual waste.

Are tailings ponds already solved?

No. Treatment and dewatering technologies are used and Alberta regulates tailings through Directive 085, but large fluid-tailings and mine-water liabilities remain.

Does reclamation happen only after closure?

No. Alberta uses progressive reclamation where land is no longer needed, although complete mine and tailings reclamation can take decades.

Is reclaimed land identical to untouched land?

No. Reclamation aims to restore approved land capability and functioning landscapes; reconstructed ecosystems can differ and require long-term monitoring.
